Shuklaphanta National Park — the pride of Kanchanpur
Kanchanpur, Sudurpashchim
Shuklaphanta National Park covers 305 km² in the far-western Terai. Its centrepiece, the Shukla Phanta grassland, is the largest continuous grassland in Nepal at roughly 16 km².
The park is famous for hosting one of the world's largest populations of barasingha (swamp deer) — herds of hundreds can be seen grazing on the open phanta. It also shelters tigers, leopards, wild elephants and over 450 recorded bird species, including the rare Bengal florican.
Best time to visit: October to April. Entry permits are arranged at the park office in Majhgaun. Guided jeep safaris and a watchtower at Rani Tal are the most popular experiences.
